若狭湾に面した伊根浦は、東西、北側の三方を山に囲まれた日本海側には珍しく南に開けた静かな入り江です。その内海と外海の接するほぼ中ほどに、
自然の築いた防波堤のように緑濃い青島が浮かんでおり、湾の入り口を二分しています。しかも、三方を囲んでいる急傾斜の硬い岩山はそのままの傾斜で
海に落ち込み、深い淵をつくって波を起こしにくい地勢を形成した静隠度の高い天然の良港です。潮の干満差は極めて小さいです。（年間50cm程度）
およそ350世帯で構成する伊根浦の集落は、伊根湾（周囲約5ｋｍ）全域にわたって海岸沿いに細長く形成されています。
