足助の町並みは、戦国時代には原型が形成され、江戸初期には今のような町割りが出来上がりました。現在の町並みは、安永４年の大火後に、
防火を意図して漆喰で軒先まで塗り固めた塗籠造りの町家が建ち並び、今日にその面影を伝えています。妻入りや平入りの変化に富んだ家並みが
約２Ｋmにわたって続き、平成２３年６月、愛知県で初めての国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に選定されました。
