京都市左京区北東部の比叡山西麓高野川上流部に位置する小規模盆地の名称。古くは「おはら」と読まれ、小原とも表記された。
かつては山城国愛宕郡に属し、南隣の八瀬とセットで「八瀬大原」とも称された。
